God, we love you.
But not like how we love our sisters, or brothers, or parents, or friends or even our spouses. Those three words are valid expressions of a sentiment deeply felt for those whom You have put in our lives who have positively contributed to the development of our characters. It has grown from a sentiment of appreciation for their loyalty in times of grief or anguish; for their ability to rejoice with us at our finest hours, and mourn with us at the darkest ones. It has matured with each word of encouragement...each moment of laughter...each expression of care. When we want to express our love for You, we are always at a loss for words. It seems rather inappropriate to express our sentiments in such common terms. When we say, We love You, it is not in the least bit equal to the love we have for those dearest and near to us. It's too bad there is not a word that can adequately express the fullness of the love that we have for You...our Creator, our Redeemer...our GOD. Wow, we are Your children. Imagine that. To be called son or daughter to One who is infinitely perfect and holy. To be known by You, and to obtain the opportunity to know You intimately. It will take eternity for us discover the dimensions of who You are, hmm I guess that's why You promised us eternal life! ..... When we say we love GOD, what do we mean? It is not a sentiment rooted in human emotions, rather it is one of heartfelt admiration and trust. It is a love borne of the Spirit, that grows exponentially as you begin to peel through the layers of God's character. It begins with a realization of how utterly unworthy you are of His love; it grows with the knowledge that His unending grace is unabashedly unmerited; and it is matured with the conviction that you were unquestionably unlovable, yet He loved you such that "while (you) were yet (a) sinner, Christ died for (you)" (John 3:16). He who knew no sin debased Himself that He might redeem those who were dead and lost. Please excuse the crude analogy, but it is like a King joining the pigs in their filth to retrieve the ones most covered in mud. His love, first expressed through this incredible sacrifice of Self, continues to be felt daily. Moreover, the message of the cross reverberates throughout history as the quality of love that could only be evoked by a perfect being. "I have loved you with an everlasting love, (GOD says) therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn you" (Jeremiah 31:3). An everlasting love? We still have trouble with the "till death do us part" bit. We praise marriages that have reached those milestones of 10, 20, 30 years...many of us wondering how they made it. It's remarkable, the complex contrarieties of God's character. Only He can add constancy to a dynamic sentiment. Only He can set the precedent for a love that is invariable in quality yet simultaneously expresses itself "new(ly) each morning" (Lamentations 3:23). This concept will forever boggle my mind. You can not know love until you have met my Savior. --Junève, Editor |
